Reporting to the Manager – Engineering (Capital Projects), the Senior Mechanical Project Engineer is responsible for overseeing the planning, execution, and management of engineering projects. This role requires technical expertise in the design of mechanical systems and the application of a multi-disciplinary understanding of process plant design and mine site infrastructure. The role requires the individual to take professional accountability for the delivery of engineered systems from concept through to operation.

Responsibilities

• Lead the detailed design of site wide infrastructure including process and mechanical systems. Oversee and manage the work of EPCM partners, as well as take professional responsibility of in-house engineering.
• Prepare scopes of work and technical tender packages. Be responsible for the technical tender process and bid evaluations.
• Own key technical project documents such as mechanical equipment lists (MELs), load lists, line designation tables, instrument lists, general arrangement / layout drawings, etc.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards, regulations, and professional practice guidelines.
• Manage engineering and design documentation produced by engineering firms and ensure that design and construction information is coordinated with all stakeholders.
• Take ownership of technical scopes of work by managing vendors, consultants, and contractors to deliver Issued for Construction (IFC) documentation.
• Ensure construction is executed per the design intent and support commissioning through to operations.
• Review engineering/contractor deliverables for technical compliance, scope alignment, and quality.
• Respond to Requests-for-Information (RFI) from engineers and construction contractors in a timely fashion.
• Provide engineering input and work closely with QA/QC specialists to ensure received equipment and materials meet requirements and installations are completed to a best-in-class standard.
• Demonstrate commercial acumen to optimize business outcomes.
• Initiate, maintain and ensure safe keeping of accurate records of design reviews, workshops, and alignment meetings.
• Weekly and monthly reporting.
• Assist with the production of engineering and construction work packages.
• Work in a team environment and share skills/experience with other members of the team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, or related field.
• Professional engineering designation (P.Eng.) in British Columbia.
• Minimum of 8-10 years of discipline or project engineering experience – responsibilities and compensation will depend on the candidate’s experience.
• Experienced in working closely with multi-disciplinary teams in a heavy industrial project development setting.
• Detailed understanding of project management and project controls principles.
• Recent mining project experience would be a strong asset, but other major capital project experience in the region could be transferable.
• Experience working for an EPC/EPCm contractor or an Owner during the project development phase.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

 

Preferred Skills

 

• Ability to travel to the project site and other engineering offices as required and be comfortable working and living in close quarters with the team.
• Ability to maintain high levels of performance over 12-hour shift.
• Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in project management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Proficiency in specialized software systems such as AFT Fathom and AutoCAD Plant 3D would be an asset.
• Technical expertise in mining process design, equipment specification, power systems, hydraulic systems, and related mine site infrastructure.
