The HSE Field Advisor provides daily, hands-on health, safety, and environmental oversight for large-scale earthworks construction activities. You will work directly with field crews and contractors to ensure compliance with the BC Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines, WorkSafeBC regulations, and company policies. This role requires an active field presence, balancing heavy civil earthworks safety (excavation, hauling, civil structures) with active construction projects around an active open pit mining operation.
Key Responsibilities
Field Oversight & Safety Leadership
- Spend 80% of shifts in the field monitoring expansion construction activities, as well as major earthworks construction (tailings dams, haul roads, water management structures).
- Coach and mentor front-line supervisors and workers on hazard identification, risk assessment, and safe work practices.
- Conduct daily safety inspections, equipment audits, and field observations to identify and mitigate at-risk behaviors or conditions.
- Facilitate and review Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs) and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) for heavy civil and mining tasks.
- Procure safety supplies such as Gas monitors, PPE, signage, fall protection harnesses, etc.
- Manage and support Capital Projects team KPI’s for behavior Based Observation requirements. , supporting with account creation, guidance on completion, and follow up on incomplete Safety audits.
- Manage Job Hazard Analysis registry, developing as needed as tasks expand for BW employees, providing guidance to supervisors, superintendents who are responsible for the work.
- Complete Incident Alerts to share site wide.
- Be comfortable driving on narrow access roads to remote worksites within the mine footprint.
Compliance & Incident Management
- Ensure strict adherence to the BC Mines Act, the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code, and WorkSafeBC regulations.
- Lead or support incident investigations using root-cause analysis methodologies (e.g., TapRoot, 5-Whys, ICAM ) and track corrective actions to closure.
- Respond immediately to field level incidents such as Dangerous Occurrences, Injuries, Environmental releases, property damage, near misses and act as a resource and facilitator to area managers to ensure post incident investigations are initiated.
- Support area managers in conducting witness interviews, incident scene preservation, and fact finding support.
- Act as a facilitator during incident investigations, ensuring the right people are available to determine root cause and corrective action implementation.
- Ensure incident investigation reports are completed on time, with all supporting documentation.
- Act as a resource for contractors completing incident investigations, ensuring they are completing quality, on time investigation reports.
- Managing incident management database ( Enablon) ensuring any open actions and incidents are being closed and validated by area managers.
- Provide coaching and guidance to supervisors, superintendents, area leads throughout each stage of an incident lifecycle.
- Support with Ministry of Mines Inspections. Participate in inspections, debriefs and providing corrective action follow up, evidence collection from contractors and BWG based on findings. Provide updates to BWG HSS Manager on corrective actions.
- Provide updates to BWG senior management during active and high severity events such as Dangerous occurrences, Medical Treatment cases, or potential Lost Time cases.
Training & Documentation
- Deliver site-specific safety inductions, toolbox talks, and specialized safety training to employees and contractors.
- Maintain accurate safety records, including incident reports, inspection logs, and training matrices.
- Prepare clear weekly and monthly HSE performance metrics and field reports for the EPMC & Senior leadership team.
- Conduct contractor and BWG visitor orientations
- Conduct Capital Project Full Day orientation
- Conduct Green Zone site driving assessments
- Provide support during pre-start meetings with contractors
- Complete weekly safety meeting presentation for all contractors
- Complete required documentation and reporting accurately and on time.
- Complete HSE pre-qualification vetting for contractors being onboarded ( safety management plan, COI, WCB history, certifications etc). Assess incident trends and provides feedback to contractors, EPMC and BWG staff on findings.
- May be required to maintain a clean-shaven appearance (i.e. no facial hair) to ensure the safe and effective use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) associated with assigned duties.
